Daniel Carpenter is Allie S. Freed Professor of Government in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Director of Social Sciences at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. Professor Carpenter's research on petitioning appears in his recently published book The Democracy of Petitions: Popular Politics in Transformation, 1790-1870 (Harvard University Press, 2021) and will feature a glimpse into how tribes used the petitioning mechanism to their disposal.
