HDS 3738: Religion and Theology in Indigenous Intellectual History

Religion and theology, especially Christianity, played a constitutive role in the emergence of intellectual work in colonial languages by Indigenous authors and continue as important areas of concern for contemporary Indigenous writers and scholars. This course focuses on the history of Indigenous writing about Christianity, Christian theology, religious and ceremonial traditions of specific Indigenous peoples, and other religious and theological themes. Authors include Samson Occom, William Apess, Ella Cara Deloria, Vine Deloria, Jr., Homer Noley, Tink Tinker, ku’ualoha ho’omanawanui, Vicente Diaz, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio, and Sterlin Harjo.
