Study Group with Judith LeBlanc: Grassroots Native Political Power

Secretary of the Interior Department Deb Haaland was the first Native to be appointed to the Presidential Cabinet. In 2018, She and Congresswoman Sharice David (KS) were the first 2 Native women to ever be elected to the US Congress. The first Native written and directed TV show portraying Native community premiered in 2021. How is organizing grassroots Native political power shaping culture, policies and the struggle to achieve sovereignty?

Judith will be joined by Jacqueline De León. Jacqueline is an enrolled member of the Isleta Pueblo. As a staff attorney at Native American Rights Fund (NARF,) she helped lead field hearings across Indian Country on Native American voting rights, co-authored NARF’s report, Obstacles at Every Turn: Barriers to Political Participation Faced by Native American Voters,  and practices ongoing voter rights litigation. Since 1970, NARF)has provided legal assistance to Native American tribes, organizations, and individuals nationwide who might otherwise have gone without adequate representation. NARF has successfully asserted and defended the most important rights of Indians and tribes in hundreds of major cases, and has achieved significant results in such critical areas as tribal sovereignty, treaty rights, natural resource protection, voting rights, and Indian education.
